It’s been said, when Michelangelo was asked how he created his statues with such perfection and detail, he answered:
‘Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.’
Fast-forward some 400-odd years. My friend Jody and I were discussing whether people change or not.
Jody put forth, ‘People are certainly capable of change, but I believe it’s extremely rare. People are who they are.’
I asked, ‘What about me? You didn’t know the ‘old me’ but wouldn’t you say, based on what we’ve discussed, that I’ve changed?’
‘I believe that when people are ready to face their truths and work on themselves, they’re really finding themselves, their true selves, rather than changing who they are.’
‘Hmmmm, ‘I said, ‘I’ll have to ponder and play with that for awhile.’
While Michelangelo was referring to Carrara marble and Jody was referring to one’s personality traits, they were discussing the same thing. They were talking about realizing the greatest potential and discovering the essence.
This Little Light of Mine…
After reflecting upon my past and the personal growth I’ve chosen to experience, I have to say that Jody’s perspective has won me over.
Yes, I’ve heard about people who’ve changed their lives. I am someone who’s transformed her Life.
It’s just; I no longer believe I’ve changed, as a person.
Jody was right; my journey of self-discovery revolutionized my Life, but…
I really didn’t change. Who I was never faltered. It was the ‘real me’, my spirit, the soul of who I really am, that finally had the chance to shine through.
I took a long, hard look at what I now call ‘my prior life’ and faced the cold, hard truths about what was working vs. what wasn’t working, for me.
Choosing different options allowed me to rework the trajectory of my Life. The results were, literally, Life changing.
The same can be true for you, too.
Whether you’re unhappy with your love life, weight, relationships or debt load, there are positive choices you can choose to make, today.
And each will have a ripple effect that will impact your Life in some encouraging way.
You’re in charge, here. The choice is up to you.
So, what’s it going to be?
You Create Your Life
When asked how he created his famous statue of David, Michelangelo reportedly said:
‘It is easy. You just chip away the stone that doesn’t look like David. The marble not yet carved can hold the form of every thought the artist has.’
You’re the artist of your Life and your Life is your masterpiece.
So chip away the stone. Discover who you are.
Reveal your truth and what you want your Life to be.
It doesn’t matter what you choose to change.
You just need a picture of what you want your Life to look like, in your mind’s eye.
There is nothing too large, or too small, to transform your Life.
You have everything you need to get started.
You have to commit to taking the first step.
So whether you choose to gently carve it away, chip at it, mold, re-shape or form it, ask yourself these questions:
- Isn’t it about time?
- Shouldn’t this be your year?
- What are you waiting for? No one’s promised you tomorrow.

‘Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.’
The chisel is in your hand. If you prefer, the brush is yours, as well. The method and the medium aren’t nearly as critical as the action.
Taking action, today, is what’s going to make the difference in your Life.
I’m speaking from experience, here.
Nothing changes if nothing changes.
Setting Yourself Free
I’d like to leave you with one last quote from Michelangelo:
‘I saw an angel in the block of marble and I chiseled until I set him free.’
There’s a divine angel inside of you. It’s who you really are. It’s your truest self. You’re the one, the only one in this whole wide world, who can set that free.
So get on with it now, won’t you?
No one’s promised you tomorrow.
This post is written in honor of the memory of Kyle Dieling. In his 27 short years here Kyle led by example, showing those around him how to live an active, rich and full Life.
So what about you? What action are you going to take, today?
I’m not talking about throw-away resolutions. Resolutions are meaningless and you know it.
